One thing that will catch many off-guard in 3 from Hell is that Captain Spaulding is only in the first act. The fact that that’s the way it’s gone, it’s awesome. You want to make things that people remember and want to revisit and come back to, that another generation finds. To have these crazy characters that 20 years ago I thought-up and made a movie that people still care about, it’s amazing. Once you get to do them, you don’t know if anyone’s going to care. I’ve always been a fan of these things, I always wanted to make movies, but you never know if you’re going to get to do these things. Being such a big horror fan yourself, what’s it like to have created a group of characters who are such big favourites of modern horror? Many hold the Firefly family on the same pedestal as a Michael Myers, a Jason Voorhees, a Freddy Krueger, and the classic Universal monsters. From there, I began working on the script and working on ideas – and here we are. I had to get their approval, and they were on board with doing it. I went to Lionsgate, who made the other movies, and said, “I’m thinking about doing this”. Then, about three years ago, I got the idea that I really wanted to do this. Over the years, they keep getting more popular and they’re always present in my life, but I never thought I would make another movie. I’ve always thought about the characters. ![]() STARBURST: It’s been 14 years since we last saw the Firefly family in 2005’s The Devil’s Rejects, so why was now finally the right time to give these characters a third feature outing? With those nefarious sorts now returning for a third outing with 3 FROM HELL, we caught up with the writer/director to chew the fat… Sid Haig himself passed away on September 21st, 2019, less than a week after the movie’s release. In the pantheon of modern horror, few characters have gathered as impressive a following as the famed Firefly family of Rob Zombie’s HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES and THE DEVIL’S REJECTS. We only get one short scene with an incarcerated Captain Spaulding at the beginning of the movie, before the character is executed off screen. Richard Brake fits right in as a member of the Firefly family, but he’s no match for Sid Haig’s charismatic Captain Spaulding. He decided to introduce a brand new character to fill in the void. However, due to Sid Haig’s deteriorating health, Rob Zombie was forced to do some major rewrites to his original script. The character of Captain Spaulding was supposed to have a much larger role in the movie. The second half in Mexico is also slightly more entertaining.īill Moseley and Sheri Moon Zombie slip effortlessly back into their demented roles as Otis and Baby. It does get better though, once the three main characters are reunited. Certain scenes of Baby in prison, or scenes involving the warden’s kidnapped family, could have easily been cut out or trimmed down to make for a better paced experience. Particularly in the first half of the movie, where it just drags on at times. The movie also suffers from an excessive runtime and some pacing issues. This is very noticeable during certain action sequences featuring cheap looking CGI for blood, bullet wounds and fire. The movie also had a much smaller budget than its predecessors. Unfortunately, Rob Zombie couldn’t really find a compelling story for them to return. Sure, it’s nice to revisit this depraved world and to see these familiar characters back again after so many years. While 3 from Hell is very similar in tone to The Devil’s Rejects, it’s also quite an inferior sequel. They soon discover though that trouble has a way of finding them, even across the border. Once reunited, the three criminals decide to flee to Mexico, since their faces are instantly recognizable in the USA. Together they devise a plan to sneak Baby out of prison by kidnapping the warden’s family and friends. Otis Driftwood escapes with the help of his half-brother Winslow Foxworth Coltrane, a.k.a. ![]() ![]() The rest of the movie takes place in 1988. All of this is presented to us in the first ten minutes of the movie through news reports and media coverage. Captain Spaulding is eventually executed via lethal injection. After their capture, the ‘Devil’s Rejects’ receive nationwide coverage from the press as they recover in the hospital, stand trial for their crimes and are sentenced to life in prison. ![]() Somehow, Baby Firefly ( Sheri Moon Zombie), Otis Driftwood ( Bill Moseley) and Captain Spaulding ( Sid Haig) have all three miraculously survived their last stand with the police.
